The best packing list is not the longest one. It is the list that keeps the important parts of your trip protected, comfortable, and easy to reach.
Pack for the moments that would be hardest to replace.
Documents, medication, communication, and a few comfort essentials belong at the top of the list. Everything else can be built around the destination.
Ten Essentials That Earn Their Place
Travel documents and secure copies. Keep your identification, passport, required visas, confirmations, and insurance details together. Store secure digital copies separately from the originals.
Essential medication. Pack enough for the trip, plus a reasonable delay buffer, in your personal item. Bring the information you would need if medication had to be replaced while away.
Phone, charging cable, and power bank. Keep the devices that hold your itinerary, contacts, maps, and boarding information charged. Power banks must remain in carry-on baggage, not checked luggage.
The correct plug adapter. An adapter changes the plug shape. It does not necessarily convert voltage. Check the device, destination, and accommodation before packing.
Supportive, already-tested shoes. Vacation is not the time to discover that new shoes rub, slip, or lack support. Match footwear to the surfaces and activities you will actually encounter.
A useful clothing layer. One lightweight layer can solve cool airplanes, breezy decks, changing elevations, air-conditioned interiors, and evenings that feel colder than forecast.
A compact personal-care and first-aid kit. Include the small things you know you use, such as sunscreen, bandages, pain relief, motion remedies, or blister care. Follow current security rules for liquids.
One change of clothing in your personal item. Add basic toiletries and anything needed for the first night. A delayed checked bag should be an inconvenience, not a crisis.
A reusable water bottle. Carry it empty through airport security and fill it afterward. Choose a size you will actually carry during the trip.
A simple organization system. Packing cubes, labeled pouches, or a consistent pocket system can make small spaces easier to manage without encouraging you to pack more.
What Belongs in Your Personal Item
Irreplaceable Items
Identification, medication, valuables, keys, and travel documents stay with you.
The First 24 Hours
Pack what you would need if the checked bag arrived the following day.
Batteries Stay With You
Spare lithium batteries and power banks belong in the aircraft cabin.
Rules Can Change
Check the current requirements for your airline, destination, and items before departure. For U.S. air travel, the TSA travel guidance explains screening and medication rules, while the FAA PackSafe guidance covers batteries and power banks.

Pack for This Trip, Not Every Possible Trip
A river cruise, safari, resort stay, guided tour, and independent city trip require different choices. Weather, mobility, dress expectations, laundry access, luggage limits, and the activities you select should shape the final list.
